What are the Warning Signs of a Toxic Relationship?

When most people think about toxic relationships, they are talking about romantic ones but, in reality, any relationship can become toxic and unhealthy. It is imperative individuals are able to recognize the signs of a toxic relationship so they can either get help to make it better or end it so they no longer feel pain and stress. The following are the most common warning signs that are present when a person is involved in an unhealthy relationship.

  • Toxic relationships are very draining and seem to zap the energy out of both parties. If a person constantly feels mentally, emotionally, and physically drained, this is not a good sign.
  • If there is a lack of trust, it will cause a relationship to quickly become unhealthy and is not conducive to happiness.
  • When a person feels as if they are always giving and never getting, this may be a sign the relationship is toxic.
  • Constant anger is a telltale sign there are problems in the relationship. Although some spats are normal, a constant barrage of anger is not.
  • An imbalanced relationship can quickly become unhealthy. When both parties are not giving it their all or feeling the same level of commitment, it simply will not work.
  • Narcissistic behaviors are common in unhealthy relationships and can become very draining to the one who is trying to cope with the behavior.
  • When there seems to be never-ending drama, it behooves a person to fully evaluate their relationship to determine if it is salvageable.
  • If a person feels as if they are being controlled all the time, this is not a sign of a healthy, stable relationship. Control is not love and should not be tolerated.

If a person is dealing with any of these signs in their relationship, counseling may be beneficial. In some cases, it is better to simply walk away from the relationship because it has truly become toxic and is no longer a viable one.

A healthy relationship should involve compromise, support, and encouragement. If you are dealing with a relationship with these issues, it is imperative you evaluate whether or not any steps can be taken to improve things.
